A Washington Post article from the frontline of the “Pineapple On Pizza” wars:
Celebrities, politicians, chefs and even minimum-wage pizzamakers count themselves as members of this pineapple hate group. Gordon Ramsay, a chef never at a loss for words, once opined, “You don’t put . . . pineapple on pizza.” He used a colorful adjective before “pineapple,” to emphasize his disdain. The president of Iceland said he would outlaw pineapple on pizza if he could, a statement that made him an instant hero in some circles. A couple of years ago, a University of Arizona undergraduate tried to add pineapple to her barbecue chicken pizza, but the pie arrived sans fruit, with a note from the campus restaurant: “Couldn’t bring myself to put pineapple on it. Thats gross. Sorry.” A $5 bill was taped to the pizza box.

Fuck, this is only a couple of miles from my synagogue.
It occurred to me that these synagogue shoot-ups are basically a form of asymmetrical warfare by the far right, employing their large reserve of violent idiots essentially as a suicide force. The shooters do not usually die in the act but there is always that risk and they are always caught. They are therefore willing to risk death and at least sacrifice themselves to prison to make their depraved point. The other side, the enlightened progressive side, cannot respond in kind because we don’t have anyone that crazy or stupid that we can draw on for attack troops.

These individuals do have a pattern to them, can’t remember where I saw an outline of what sort of things to look out for with people that have a higher risk of being stochastically “cooked off”.
What I’d do is to take that list, and treat anyone which significantly ticks off boxes as a potential threat and liability, and by behavior signal that you view him/her as such.
Something among the lines of the set of behaviors a Swedish cop goes before he or she assumes the firing stance and places his or her hand on the grip of the service firearm.
Activate cameras, observe any out of place behavior etc.

In replies to people who tweeted about Poway, I’m seeing a lot of RWNJ/white supremacist tweets suggesting that Israeli Jews are mostly of European descent. This is not true.
The Jews of Israel consist of, in chronological order:
1. People whose families have been there for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.
2. Early 20th century zionists (Theodore Herzl followers), and their descendants.
3. People who left Europe in the 1930’s, because they sensed what was coming (and their descendants)
4. Post-WWII DP’s (and their descendants)
5. Jews who were deported/evicted from Arab and/or Muslim nations in 1949-1950 (and their descendants)
6. 1950’s/1960’s aliyah Jews and their descendants (the smallest of these categories — about evenly split between Ashkenazi and Sephardic)
7. 1970’s Russian Jews and their descendants.
8. 1980’s-today aliyahs.
Until the mid-1980’s, the Jews of Israel were majority non-white. The Mizrahi (categories 1 and 5) were the majority.
ETA: category 8 is also minority Ashkenazi; lots of Falasha (Ethiopian, Sudanese, and other Africans).

The Beast, who is incapable of thought and is the least spiritual creature on the face of the planet, offers ‘thoughts and prayers’—a sympathy card stamped with someone’s name is more sincere than the Beast. Fresh from his NRA speech yesterday, he then makes it worse (of course), by saying today’s shooting is ‘hard to believe’—neither he nor his low-quality staff thought to acknowledge the Tree of Life shooting 6 months ago. There is not one person who is part of the 1600 Krew who knows how to do even one thing right—no one thought to call off tonight’s hate rally to show some respect? Nope, just as he did after the Tree of Life shooting, he’s off to another rally.

Did you say anything to him about it? Or to anyone else? Or at least make a sour face?
The way they have it setup at Resch Center, capacity for an event like this is 7,500 people, and the event sold out, so there’s over 7,000 red hat waterheads gathered in one place right now. The population of Green Bay proper is just over 100,000, with the metro area being about 320,000.

I saw that it has been used as an ice rink, and thought for a sec it could be the one large facility I’ve been to in Green Bay, where I saw an aunt and uncle do some curling. But that would have been in the 70s, so that one’s long gone.

Yeah. Definitely seeing similarities. My term paper btw was about Antisemitism in 1881-1918 Russia. It was inspired by the Anti Muslim fanaticism of Obama’s first term.

Tough question but I’d say the Alt Right definitely resembles the Black Hundreds.
The old Know Nothings resembles Trump’s movement too.
I’ve thought long and hard about a proper response to Trump’s “killing babies after they’re born” rhetoric. And the only proper response is BULLSHIT! Someone tries it, just shut it down. There is no reasoning. They only way you’re going to punch through that shit is to push them back on their heels.

Contrast their attitude with Lincoln’s. Lincoln was very pro immigrant as well. Abe is my favorite President.

And you know, I called my doctor’s office yesterday to find out if I should wander by for a booster measles shot because I’m going to Japan in two weeks. Not because I’m going to Japan, but because I’m going through an American airport. *facepalm* The nurse said the CDC hadn’t issued a recommendation on boosters. The anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany traces all the way back to Martin Luther.
On the Jews and Their Lies (goes to the Wikipedia article on Martin Luther’s 65,000 word book written in 1543)
In the treatise, he argues that Jewish synagogues and schools be set on fire, their prayer books destroyed, rabbis forbidden to preach, homes burned, and property and money confiscated. They should be shown no mercy or kindness, afforded no legal protection, and “these poisonous envenomed worms” should be drafted into forced labor or expelled for all time. He also seems to advocate their murder, writing “[W]e are at fault in not slaying them”.
Anti-Semitism is baked into the Protestant Reformation. Those church denominations which are no longer anti-Semitic have renounced that position despite their history.

CBC Marketplace used four pairs of identical twins to debunk the five largest DNA testing companies’ claims that they can identify accurately where you are from. (In some cases the identical twins were not found to be from the same area.)
Part of the problem is using a migrant species and fit it into the idea of nations.
The CBC article calls in a geneticist and other experts to explain both the issues with these companies and their misleading advertising. (For example, leiderhosen are not in your DNA. They describe it as “recreational science” and not actually tracing your ethnic heritage. They point out probably the closest they could get is continent-level. One company even has in its fine print that some of its work is guesswork.)

Thinking of writing a sidebar article over my ongoing health scare, especially if my upcoming test on May 2 comes up positive.
Considering the public’s lack of knowledge about the issue, that seems like a thing to do.
I can also document the process of what happens if the test comes up positive.
In a way it’s something like a “coming out” declaration for marginalised people. Most men are afraid to admit this problem when they have it. That said, I don’t really give a hoot so “coming out” might be useful.

Polling on who’s doing well and who’s not this far out from the election is mostly news organisations trying to create news.
Being first in the early polling is not much of an advantage, and it means everyone else is gunning for you.
re: #340 Belafon

I think anyone receiving it should not comment on it either way. It’s not an endorsement of any weight beyond being made by a celebrity. And the candidate does not need to tow said celebrity’s baggage into the campaign.

I’m aware of this but you can’t dismiss that he’s polling at 1% either. A lot can happen but I think it’s unlikely Julian Castro will get frontrunner status. Yeah and the good news is I have heard that Julian polls better when more Hispanic voters are included. We would be foolish not to consider him or his brother as part of the future. I’ve said before that the results saying you’re 55% British, 25% French and 20% German (or whatever) are total BS. National borders are constantly in flux over the long run, as anyone who has studied WWI and WWII would know. Besides that, DNA has nothing to do with nationality. At best, we can say a particular haplotype is found most commonly in this general area. We can’t pinpoint where your ancestors were located beyond that level.
Case in point, my earliest documented American ancestor came from the British Isles. DNA analysis suggests he was originally from Wales or southwest England, probably Devon. People with my surname do live in that area, but that’s not proof he came from Devon. There is no documentation surviving that gives us his birthplace or last known residence before he pops up in public records in Cape May County, NJ, in the 1740s.
His genetic markers suggest his (and my) deep ancestry is Celtic, and those folks were not originally from the British Isles. So, when I say “I have British ancestry,) I am really saying “My Old World ancestors were probably in Devon before they came to NJ.” The Celtic peoples thousands of years ago were located in what is now Central Asia. So, does that make me Asian or Turkic? Depends on whether you assign those labels according to genetic markers or original location.
Or appearance. Here in China, citizens who don’t look “Chinese” find others cannot believe they are Chinese by birth and citizenship. A couple of my friends here have even been asked if they are of mixed marriages, because their facial features have some caucasian aspects, particularly their eyes and skin tone. One was born in Xinjiang, but says she is Han, and the other is from Yunnan and is a member of the Zhuang minority.

There were cousins of my grandparents who were born in the Austrian-Hungarian empire, came of age in Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, and died in the Slovene and Slovak Republics. Hell though, with one of my Irish lines, I know the family’s history in Ireland. They were a Norman family that intermarried with Celtic Irish. I’m more interested in meeting cousins than some kind genetic calculus anyhow. I am glad though that I did locate where in Ireland where some of my family lived before emigration.
